Good governance
plays a decisive role in shaping justice in Tanzania, especially within
political institutions such as the Executive, Parliament, electoral bodies, and
oversight authorities. In simple terms, justice in politics cannot exist
without good governance. When political power is exercised according to the
law, with accountability and transparency, justice becomes possible. When power
is abused or concentrated without checks, justice is weakened, regardless of
how strong the laws appear on paper.
One of the
strongest links between good governance and justice in Tanzania is the rule of
law. Article 13 of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, 1977
guarantees equality before the law and the right to be heard without
discrimination. Good governance ensures that this principle applies to
everyone, including political leaders, Members of Parliament, ministers, and
senior public officials. When governance is strong, political status does not
protect a person from investigation, prosecution, or judicial scrutiny. When
governance is weak, laws may be applied selectively, and justice may depend on
political influence rather than legal merit.
