Prohibited Relationships Under the Law of Marriage Act, Tanzania.

Prohibited Relationships Under the Law of Marriage Act, Tanzania.

Section 14 of The Law of Marriage Act [CAP. 29 R.E. 2019] clearly outlines the relationships that are legally prohibited for marriage in Tanzania. The law strictly forbids any person from marrying close blood relatives such as a grandparent, parent, child, grandchild, sibling, uncle, aunt, niece, or nephew. Additionally, it extends this prohibition to in-laws and adopted family members, including the grandparents, parents, children, or grandchildren of a current or former spouse, as well as adopted persons and their adoptive parents. Important, the law treats half-blood relationships the same as full-blood ones and considers legitimacy irrelevant. This means even if a person was born out of wedlock, the marriage prohibition still applies. These restrictions aim to uphold moral standards and protect family integrity. Anyone falling under these restricted categories is considered to be in a "prohibited relationship," and any attempt to marry within these bounds would be void under the laws of Tanzania.
