Rationale: Difficulty during coupling despite
apparently intact components can result from misalignment, restricted movement,
damaged or incorrectly positioned moving parts, or problems with the coupling
mechanism. Examination should therefore begin with the mechanical relationship
and movement of the coupler components. Increasing brake-cylinder pressure or
examining unrelated wagon systems would not directly address the mechanical
cause of difficulty during engagement.
